Updated over 5 months ago

1. Features and Purpose

Module Functionality Overview:
The Secondary Screen Ads module allows you to assign preloaded video or image content to be played on a device's secondary screen. It is designed for scenarios such as in-store promotions, brand visibility, and campaign marketing. This module supports ad playback priority and intelligent switching, ensuring optimal use of the secondary screen during idle times.

This module is available for KMA and IMA devices and is configured via the KiwiCloud console.

The actual playback behavior (e.g., whether to play ads, ad volume, content preview, playback order) is controlled by the "Secondary Screen Ads" app installed on the device. Users can interact with the app directly on the device for content control.

⚠️ Before configuring secondary screen ad rules, please ensure the target device has the "Secondary Screen Ads" app installed and enabled. Otherwise, the pushed configurations will not take effect.

Primary Operations:

  • Create a new secondary screen ad: assign a device group, configure playback rules, upload ad content;

  • Enable or disable ad rules.

Secondary Operations:

  • View details of an ad rule;

  • Edit existing rule configurations;

  • Delete ad rules no longer in use.

Typical Use Cases:

  • Retail stores display brand ads on the secondary screen during checkout to boost product visibility;

  • Restaurant POS terminals play promotional videos on the secondary screen to drive conversions;

  • Chain stores deploy unified ad content to standardize brand presentation and enhance consistency.

2. Main Operations

2.1 Create a New Secondary Screen Ad

Description

The "Create Secondary Screen Ad" feature allows you to configure a set of ad materials and assign playback rules to a specific device group, enabling content display on the secondary screen. You can upload images or videos and set playback priority or intelligent switching behavior.

This feature is only available for KMA and IMA devices. If a device group contains GMA devices, the system will automatically ignore them.

Each device group can only have one secondary screen ad rule. To change content, use the "Edit" or "Delete" functions to reconfigure.

Ad rules require devices to be online for immediate deployment:

  • KMA devices: If offline, the system will automatically deliver the configuration when the device comes online, always using the latest configuration.

  • IMA devices: Configuration commands have an expiration period. If not delivered within that time, the configuration will expire.

  • If the rule is misconfigured or content needs updating, use the "Edit" function to adjust and save again.

Steps

  1. Open the Creation Page

    • Click the "Create Ad" button at the top-right of the secondary screen ad page to open the configuration dialog.

  2. Enter Basic Ad Information

    • Device Group (required): Select one device group to apply the ad rule (only one allowed);

    • Ad Name (required): Custom name for easy identification and management.

  3. Configure Playback Rules

    • Playback Mode:

      • Ad Priority: The ad content will forcibly occupy the secondary screen;

      • Smart Switch: The ad plays during idle time and hides automatically during business activity;

    • Actual playback behavior is controlled by the “Secondary Screen Ads” app on the device.

  4. Upload Ad Content

    • Click the 【+】 button to upload image or video files; supported formats: JPG/JPEG/PNG (≤5MB), MP4 video (≤100MB);

    • Recommended resolutions:

      • 15.6-inch screen: 1920×1080

      • 10.1-inch screen: 1280×800

    • Up to 10 materials can be uploaded; drag to rearrange playback order.

  5. Set Status

    • Toggle the Status switch to enable the ad rule. Once saved, the system will immediately deliver the configuration to devices.

    • If set to "Disabled", the rule will be saved but not deployed. It will only take effect once manually enabled later.

  6. Save Configuration

    • Click Confirm to complete the ad creation and initiate delivery.

Notes

  • Only KMA and IMA devices support secondary screen ads; GMA devices are not supported;

  • Only one secondary screen ad rule is allowed per device group. If a duplicate is created, the system will prompt for overwrite;

  • For offline devices, configuration is handled based on device type (auto-delivery for KMA, timeout expiration for IMA);

  • Optimize uploaded content to ensure smooth playback on terminals;

  • Ad playback behavior depends on the device-side “Secondary Screen Ads” app settings, such as volume control and playback toggle.

2.2 Enable / Disable

Description

The “Enable / Disable Ad Rule” function controls whether an existing ad rule is actively applied on the target devices. You can toggle the switch in the rule list to enable or disable the rule. Once toggled, the system will send the corresponding command to apply or remove the configuration.

  • Enable Rule: The system delivers the ad configuration to target devices. Devices will begin displaying the ad content according to the rule.

  • Disable Rule: Devices will remove the previously delivered ad resources, and the secondary screen ad feature will be turned off.

Steps

  1. Go to [Configuration Management > Secondary Screen Ads];

  2. Locate the target rule and toggle the Status switch;

  3. A confirmation dialog will appear. Click Confirm to proceed with enabling or disabling the rule;

  4. The system will automatically deliver or remove the configuration accordingly.

Notes

  • Once enabled, the system will immediately deliver the ad configuration to the device;

  • Once disabled, the ad content will be removed from the device and will no longer be displayed;

  • If the device is currently offline:

    • KMA devices will receive the command automatically once they come online;

    • IMA devices must come online within the command’s validity period, otherwise the configuration will expire;

  • Devices of the GMA type will be automatically ignored during delivery;

  • This operation is irreversible — please ensure the configuration is correct before enabling the rule.

  • If the device does not have the “Secondary Screen Ads” app installed, no ad operations will be performed.

4. Configuration Items

The configuration items of the Secondary Screen Ads module primarily include rule information, playback control parameters, and ad media resources. Below is a detailed explanation of each item:

Item Name

Required

Description

Ad Name

Yes

Identifies the current secondary screen ad rule. Clear naming is recommended for easier management and identification.

Device Group

Yes

Select one device group to apply the ad rule to. Only one group can be selected and cannot be changed after creation. Each group can have only one ad rule.

Playback Mode

Yes

Controls how the ad content is displayed on the secondary screen: - Ad Priority: Ads are forcefully displayed, overriding business interfaces; - Smart Switch: Ads are played when the screen is idle and hidden during business operations. Actual behavior is controlled by the device’s “Secondary Screen Ads” app.

Media Resources

Yes

Uploaded images or video files to be displayed on the secondary screen: - Supported formats: JPG / JPEG / PNG (≤5MB), MP4 (≤100MB); - Max uploads: Up to 10 items, with drag-and-drop ordering; - Recommended resolution: 1920×1080 for 15.6" screen, 1280×800 for 10.1"; - Once submitted, the uploaded content will replace the existing ad media on the device.
