App Categories

Create custom categories to organize private, public, and web apps, improving classification and policy assignment efficiency.

Updated yesterday

1. Features and Purpose

The App Categories module allows enterprises to define a custom classification system for managing large volumes of apps more efficiently. It helps administrators categorize, filter, and configure apps precisely.

This module supports the creation of custom private categories, which can be used to classify the following app types:

  • Enterprise Private Apps

  • Enterprise Public Apps

  • Enterprise Web Apps

Notes:

  • App categories are enterprise-specific and cannot be shared or accessed across enterprises.

  • Only the three app types above are currently supported; Google Play apps are not supported.

  • Deleting a category does not remove the apps; affected apps will be reassigned to the Default category.

  • Categories can be used in the My Apps module for filtering and management.

  • All actions like creation, editing, and deletion are logged for auditing purposes.

Primary Operations:

Action

Description

Create Private App Category

Create enterprise-specific private categories, visible only within the enterprise for app classification

Secondary Operations:

Typical Use Cases:

  • Organize apps by business system, such as "POS System", "Membership System", "Delivery System".

  • Separate beta and production versions for more accurate strategy assignments.

  • Group apps by region/store and combine with app publishing policies for targeted deployment.

2. Primary Operations

2.1 Create Private App Category

Description

The "Create Private App Category" function allows enterprises to define a customized app classification structure. Administrators can fill in the category name, upload an icon, and set the status to quickly create a new category, and move apps originally assigned to the default category into the new one.

The created categories are visible only within the current enterprise and apply to Enterprise Private Apps, Enterprise Public Apps, and Enterprise Web Apps. Once created, the categories can be used for filtering apps in modules like My Apps and App Publishing Policy, improving app discovery and strategy assignment efficiency.

Notes

  • Categories only support three types of apps: Enterprise Private Apps, Enterprise Public Apps, and Enterprise Web Apps.

  • Category name is required and must be unique.

  • Category icon is optional, but it is recommended to upload an image sized 120x120 (JPG, JPEG, PNG, or GIF).

  • Each app can belong to only one category. When you select an app during category creation, it will be moved from its current category (e.g., Default) to the new one.

  • After creation, you can view, edit, or delete the category in the "App Category List".

  • The system default category (e.g., Default) cannot be edited or deleted.

  • Deleting a custom category will not delete the apps, only remove their category assignment.

Steps

  1. Click "Create Private App Category"

    • Go to the App Categories module and click the [Create Private App Category] button at the top right.

  2. Enter Category Information

    • Category Name: Enter a name for the new category (required, max 256 characters).

    • Category Icon: Optionally upload an icon file (recommended size: 120x120, formats supported: JPG, JPEG, PNG, GIF).

    • Status Switch: Enable or disable the category. Enabled by default.

  3. Select Apps to Transfer

    • In the “Default Category Apps” list, select the apps to be reassigned to the new category.

    • Selected apps will appear in the Selected Apps panel on the right.

  4. Confirm and Create

    • After completing the configuration, click the [Create] button in the bottom-right corner.

    • The system will save the new category and assign the selected apps to it.

    • You will be redirected to the App Categories main list, where you can see the new category and the number of associated apps.

3. Secondary Operations

3.1 Disable/Enable Category

Description

This function allows administrators to control whether a specific app category is visible and accessible to end users in iMin Store. When a category is enabled, users can browse it and view the apps it contains. When disabled, the category will be hidden from iMin Store, preventing users from accessing it through the category entry point, though it does not affect the apps’ availability or management.

This feature is typically used to manage categories related to specific industries, customers, or deprecated content, ensuring the Store remains clean and relevant.

Important Notes:

  • Only applicable to IMA-type devices.

  • Disabling a category does not affect the apps under it or their policy delivery; it only impacts category display in iMin Store.

  • Disabled categories can be re-enabled at any time to restore their visibility.

Notes

  • This feature is currently supported only for IMA-type devices.

  • Toggling the category status only affects the frontend display in iMin Store and does not impact backend app management.

  • Once enabled, the category becomes immediately visible on end devices without requiring reboot or refresh.

  • Apps under a disabled category are still accessible via search, policy deployment, etc.

  • It is recommended to manage categories based on actual operational needs and content governance strategies.

Steps

  3. Enable a Category

    • For a disabled category, click the [Enable] button in the action column;

    • Confirm in the popup to restore its visibility in iMin Store.

  4. Status Sync

    • The updated category status will be synced to all IMA devices' iMin Store clients;

    • No additional action is required on the device side—users will immediately see the change.

3.2 Edit

Description

This operation allows you to edit an existing private app category, including its name, icon, and status, and optionally migrate apps from the default category into this one. Changes will immediately affect category management across multiple platform modules.

It not only impacts how categories are displayed in the iMin Store but also updates the classification of enterprise apps (including private, public, and web apps) to ensure consistency across the app library, policy configurations, and other management scenarios.

Notes

  • Editable fields include:

    • Category name (up to 256 characters);

    • Category icon (recommended size: 120x120; formats: JPG, GIF, PNG);

    • Category status (enabled / disabled);

    • App assignment: apps can be migrated from the default category to this one;

  • Changes will be synced to the following modules:

    • iMin Store: updates category name and visibility for end-users;

    • My Apps: updates app category affiliations;

  • Changes take effect immediately and cannot be undone;

  • Disabled categories are hidden from iMin Store but remain usable for app classification;

3.3 Details

Description

This feature allows you to view detailed information about a private app category, including the category name, icon, and its associated app list. Through this page, administrators can quickly confirm the number and details of apps under the category (e.g., app name, package name, version number), facilitating classification maintenance, policy configuration, and content review.

This details view serves as a key entry point for category management, particularly useful in classification verification, content tracing, and version control scenarios.

Notes

  • This page only displays enterprise apps assigned to the category, including private, public, and web apps;

  • If the category contains no apps, the list will be empty;

  • No direct editing is supported on this page; to make changes, go to the Edit page;

  • This feature is only available for IMA-type devices.

Steps

  1. Open the Category List

  4. Exit the Details View

    • Click the Close button in the top-left corner to return to the main interface;

    • To manage category content, use the Edit feature.

3.4 Delete

Description

This operation is used to permanently delete a private app category. Once deleted, the category will be removed from the list, and all apps previously assigned to it will be automatically moved to the “Default” category, ensuring that no enterprise app remains uncategorized on the platform.

This operation is suitable for cleaning up unused, redundant, or incorrectly named categories, helping enterprises maintain a clear and manageable classification structure.

Notes

  • Deletion is irreversible. Please confirm the category is no longer needed before proceeding;

  • If the category contains apps, they will be automatically reassigned to the Default category;

  • The Default category is system-reserved and cannot be deleted;

  • Deleting a category does not affect the app’s availability or its policy assignments—it only changes its classification.

Steps

  1. Open the Category List

    • Go to App ManagementApp Categories, and locate the category to delete.

  2. Initiate the Delete Operation

    • Click the Actions button next to the target category, then select Delete;

    • A confirmation window will appear, showing the number of apps in the category and informing that they will be moved to the Default category.

  3. Confirm and Execute

    • Click Confirm to proceed with deletion;

    • Click Cancel to abort the operation.

  4. Post-deletion Outcome

    • The category will be removed from the page;

    • Apps formerly under this category can now be found under the Default category;

    • All related actions will be logged in the system for auditing and tracking purposes.

4. Configuration Items

This module supports configuring and managing the category information of private applications. All category configurations will synchronize across the enterprise app display structure (including private, public, and web apps) and terminal views (iMin Store).

While categories do not directly affect app functionality or policy execution, they play a vital role in operational organization and management.

Configuration Item

Description

Category Name

The name of the application category, used to distinguish different types of enterprise apps (e.g., Tools, Productivity). Maximum length is 256 characters; both Chinese and English are supported. This name is displayed in the enterprise app list, category management page, and iMin Store.

Category Icon

The graphical icon representing the app category. Recommended size: 120x120 px. Supported formats: JPG, GIF, PNG. The icon is displayed on the iMin Store frontend to enhance visual recognition.

Status

Controls whether the category is visible in iMin Store:

- Enabled: The category is visible in iMin Store, and users can browse apps under it;

- Disabled: The category is hidden from iMin Store but still available for internal app management and policy configurations.

App Assignment

Allows enterprise private, public, and web apps to be moved from the default category to a custom category. Each app can only belong to one category.

Category assignment affects how apps are displayed in the “App List.” After migration, the app will no longer appear under its original category.

Deletion Rules

When deleting a non-default category that contains apps, the system will automatically move those apps to the Default category.

The default category is system-reserved and cannot be deleted.

Deletion is irreversible—please proceed with caution.

Category Impact Scope

Category information affects the display structure in the following modules:

- Classification labels and management interface in the Enterprise App Library;

- Category views in the iMin Store frontend (only when enabled). This influence is limited to the display structure and does not affect the functionality, status, or policy assignments of the apps.
